portraits of utility by matt niebuhr.

i've only been in southern california for two weeks and i almost miss seeing all of the barns and the occasional tractor drive-by that wisconsin has. i didn't even live in the country! i guess that's just the charm of america's dairyland. note: every time someone asks to see my id here, they always say "oh, you're a long way from home - wisc-ooown-sin" it makes me wonder, do i really say wisconsin with that much twang?

Steve Kuhl : Ultimate Pirate Ship Bedroom.

Are you serious right now? Where was this house when I was growing up? "Designer Steve Kuhl fulfills every boy's (hello?) fantasy with this insanely cool pirate ship bedroom. The six-year-old occupant from Minnesota chose between a space ship, race car, castle, and pirate ship. Most of us would probably agree, he made an excellent decision."

Opus 5 Architects.

Paris studio Opus 5 Architects have completed this island house in Brittany, France, featuring a glazed façade with sections covered by stone screens.Called Belle Iloise House, the long building is divided in two by a glazed walkway. The walkway houses a glazed footbridge, which connects the bedrooms to the rest of the house. I really do like the design of this house, because it looks cool and makes sense. Plus, it's good to see something so simple and beautiful.

Wilkinson Tree House Residence.

A few photos of the Wilkinson Tree House Residence in Portland, Oregon designed by architect Robert Harvey Oshatz. Located on a flag lot, a steep sloping grade provided the opportunity to bring the main level of the house into the tree canopy to evoke the feeling of being in a tree house. A lover of music, the client wanted a house that not only became part of the natural landscape but also addressed the flow of music.

JAJA Architects.

Here's a project by JAJA Architects that explores fourteen architectural based scenarios of how people and pixies aka 'Nisse' (Scandinavian elfs) co-exist. All in the form of snow globes! This is TOO COOL.

Just a Pile of Firewood Cabin.

Designed and implemented by Dutch firm Thomas Mayer, the log shack was requested by musician Hans Liberg. Liberg wanted a small building on his property where he could go to write and record music. Thomas Mayer had the perfect solution: a pre-fabricated shack disguised to look like nothing more than a pile of wood in the owner’s field.

The Land of Giants.

The Land of Giants design transforms mundane electrical pylons into statues on the Icelandic landscape by making only small alterations to existing pylon design. These iconic pylon-figures created by Choi + Shine Architects will become monuments in the landscape.
